The Babel that Is Blair: Political Theology for the Third Millennium

Graeme Smith

Abstract

There exists in British Christian political theology a strong current of opinion that is critical of neo-liberal capitalism and is suspicious or critical of Blair and New Labour because it has 'sold out' to this form of capitalism. It is argued, in broad terms, that the political changes introduced by Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan have led to increasingly divided societies in which there are the powerful capitalists and the marginalized oppressed. The stated or implied view of those who subscribe to this critique is that Blair and New Labour need to be more or actually socialist if they are to address the problems caused by the Reagan/Thatcher years. Political theologians, it is suggested, need to offer the theological and ideological apparatus to critique Blair and New Labour.
